OCWA, City of Stratford and SUEZ to Explore Partnership on Project to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

December 8, 2017

December 8, 2017-- The City of Stratford welcomes the opportunity to explore a formal partnership with the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) and SUEZ – Water Technologies & Solutions1 on a project that could significantly reduce harmful Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. The project would use new technology to optimize the existing Stratford Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) infrastructure and increase its production of methane gas, by adding compost and food waste. The resulting methane gas could then be converted into Renewable Natural Gas – a clean, carbon-neutral energy source – and fed back into the local gas distribution system.

This “Net Zero” initiative would produce a renewable energy source and divert waste from the City’s landfill. The project could serve as a model for other municipalities across Ontario and Canada, many of which have untapped potential to produce Renewable Natural Gas and significantly reduce harmful GHG emissions.

This project has received funding from Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), through a program called Target GHG, dedicated to projects that reduce GHGs and increase energy efficiency. It was facilitated through the Southern Ontario Water Consortium, an organization created to help accelerate water innovations through real-world demonstration.

A supporting business case is also being prepared for the City of Stratford’s consideration.

The undertaking would support the province’s strategy for a waste-free Ontario, and its GHG reduction goals.
